Amazon Worker Shot Himself To Death Outside Norwood Warehouse: Authorities
Norwood Police placed a call about a man who was injured at the Amazon warehouse in Norwood, located at 750 Everett Street, around 8:15 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 19, Norfolk County District Attorney spokesperson David Traub confirmed to Daily Voice.
Upon arrival, authorities found 23-year-old Yvens Jean, of Brockton, suffering from a gunshot wound to the upper part of his body. Jean was taken to a local hospital where he died from his injuries the next day, Traub said.
Surveillance footage showed Jean leaving the warehouse during his shift and returning a short time later. It was then that he apparently shot himself in the parking lot of the facility, Traub said. Jean had only worked there for six weeks, The Daily Beast reports.
“We’re truly saddened by this incident and our thoughts are with everyone impacted,” Amazon spokesperson Steve Kelly told the outlet. “We are cooperating with law enforcement as they investigate and will defer any relevant questions to them for now.”
A Glock pistol was also recovered at the scene and authorities do not suspect foul play was involved, Traub said. The investigation is ongoing.
This is not the first time Amazon has dealt with a suspected suicide at one of their facilities. In March 2021, an employee appeared to have "fallen or jumped" inside an Amazon facility in North Las Vegas, NV, NBC reports.
Authorities determined that Paul Vilscek, age 48, died from “blunt or injury to the head, trunk and extremities” and that the manner of death was suicide, the outlet reports citing the Chief Medical Examiner's Office.
The Norwood facility also made headlines when a former Amazon employee stole a van from the warehouse and led police on a chase through several MetroWest communities in August 2021, WCVB reports.
Norwood Police Sgt. Jay Payne told the outlet that the ex-employee got into an argument with a manager in the parking lot before taking a key to the van and driving away.
The manager was also injured after being dragged through the parking lot when trying to stop the employee from taking the van, the outlet reports.
