With the mass exodus at One Chicago (Fire‘s Brett and P.D.‘s Upton are just a couple characters fans can expect to leave this year), there’s concern over whether longtime cast members could exit too, especially fan-favorites like Chicago P.D.‘s Marina Squerciati.
Squerciati plays Officer Kim Burgess, a former flight attendant turned patrol officer, on Chicago P.D. She’s one of four original cast members on Chicago P.D. along with Jason Beghe (Sergeant Hank Voight); Patrick Fleuger (Adam Ruzek); and LaRoyce Hawkins (Kevin Atwater.)
Chicago P.D. is NBC’s police procedural drama that follows the personal and professional lives of patrol officers and detectives at the Chicago Police Department’s fictional 21st District and Intelligence Unit. The series — which premiered in 2014 and is created by Dick Wolf, the same mind behind the Law & Order and FBI franchises — is part of NBC’s One Chicago world, which also includes Chicago Fire and Chicago Med.
Since her One Chicago debut a decade ago, Burgess has been a fan favorite among fans, especially for her relationship with her fellow officer, Ruzek. But after a string of recent exits in One Chicago (including Chicago P.D.‘s Tracy Spiridakos/Hailey Upton, and Chicago Fire‘s Kara Killmer/Sylvie Brett and Alberto Rosende/Blake Gallo), it’s understandable why viewers are worried about Burgess future on the series and whether Marina Squerciati could be leaving Chicago P.D. too. Is Marina Squerciati leaving Chicago P.D.? Read on for what she’s said about Burgess’ future in One Chicago.
Is Marina Squerciati leaving Chicago P.D.?
Is Marina Squerciati leaving Chicago P.D.? The answer is no — at least, not anytime soon. Squerciati, who’s played Officer Kim Burgess since Season 1 of Chicago P.D., confirmed she isn’t leaving the series in an interview with TV Insider in January 2024. “As far as I know, I’m still here,” she said.
If Squerciati was to leave, she would be the second Chicago P.D. cast member to exit in Season 11 after Tracy Spiridakos, who plays Detective Hailey Upton. News broke of Spiridakos’ departure from Chicago P.D. in October 2023. While Upton and Burgess won’t have a major scene together before Spiridakos leaves Chicago P.D., Squerciati did confirm that she and Spiridakos are planning a trip together as a farewell to her time on One Chicago. “There’s not, but Marina and Tracy are taking a trip to Miami, so we’ll be posting pictures on Instagram, so we’ll see that,” Squerciati said.
As for Burgess, Squerciati told TV Insider at the time that Chicago P.D. had only filmed up to Episode 7 of Season 11. She also opened up about Burgess’ major episode in Season 11, Episode 3, “Safe Harbor,” in which Burgess works an extra shift and gets caught in the middle of a drive-by attack on refugees. “It’s really well-written, and I’d like to take credit, like, ‘It’s all me. I made it sing,’ but the script by [writer and co-executive producer] Scott Gold is just was so phenomenal, the integration of the personal and the crime of the week,” Squerciati said. “It was a wonderful script. I was so lucky to get it.”
Squerciati also teased the episode — which features a major moment between Burgess and her love interest, Adam Ruzek — in an Instagram post at the time. “When you’re trying to post a cheesy prom pic and your partner cannot keep a straight face. SO RUDE. Anyway, BIG BIG BIG BIG BURZEK episode Wednesday. If you love me you’ll watch it. There I said it. #chicagopd #burzekarmy #burzek #chicago #tvcouple #padrina,” she captioned an Instagram post of her and her Chicago P.D. co-star, Patrick Fleuger, who plays Ruzek. The post led to speculation of an engagement between Ruzek and Burgess. “He better put a ring on it!” a user commented.
Ruzek and Burgess, also known by fans as Burzek, have dated on and off since Chicago P.D. Season 1. In an interview with NBC Insider in May 2023, Ruzek opened up about why he believes viewers have connected with Burzek so much. “I think it has to do with balance,” he said. “I think it’s just they balance each other out. They just collectively calm each other down and, you know, validate each other’s strengths and make up for each other’s weaknesses.”
Showrunner Gwen Sigan also teased what was ahead for Burgess and Ruzek’s relationship in Chicago P.D. Season 11. “They’ve been in that same space that we left them in, which is they’re very committed to each other,” Sigan said. “[They’re] very committed to this new life together and being romantically involved, and also being a family and being parents together. Being all the things. So, that has been going strong.”
She continues, “This season, we really wanted to focus on these two people have made this choice that they’re in it for the long haul. They’re grown-ups. They know what that means. They know that it’s like any relationship. It’s not going to be easy all the time. It will be work, but that they are so committed to each other.”
Chicago P.D. is available to stream on Peacock.
