Unclaimed remains of two Centre Co. veterans to be moved to Fort Indiantown Gap Cemetery
CENTRE COUNTY, Pa (WJAC) — Centre County administrators this week had the difficult task of deciding how to best honor a couple of military veterans.
For a few veterans, their passing isn’t followed with a funeral service as sometimes their remains go unclaimed. That’s the story for two veterans who died in the county.
The county coroners, and veterans’ affairs offices researched possible outcomes, saying they didn’t want the veterans forgotten.
“It would be my preference to place them in a national cemetery. That would be my thought.”
That ended up being the decision. A national cemetery being the final resting place following veterans’ administration guidelines.
“There are guidelines they have on whether they qualify for that, like length of service, character of discharges, those type of things. For unclaimed remains, they have procedures to get them approved and placed in a national cemetery.”
The remains of the two veterans will now be sent to the Fort indiantown Gap Cemetery for interment.
