Grey Damon has starred as the beloved Jack Gibson since the show first debuted in 2018. Although the actor has given no indication that he plans to leave before the show’s series finale, the Season 6 cliffhanger ending had fans worried about Jack’s future. Although he appeared fine at first, he collapsed in the last few minutes of the episode and was still unconscious when the episode ended. What happened to Jack Gibson on Station 19?
What happened to Jack Gibson on Station 19? In the Season 7 premiere, viewers learned that Jack had survived his head injury, but he never be cleared to work as a firefighter again.
New showrunners Zoanne Clack and Peter Paige defended Jack’s heartbreaking fate shortly after the episode aired, with Paige telling TVLine: “It was really important to me that we explore what it is to let go of a dream, and there is something about Jack Gibson, about his openness and vulnerability, that makes him a really compelling vehicle to explore [that with].”
Clack added: “We have beaten the s—t out of the poor man, literally physically, and at a certain point you just have to acknowledge that that’s going to have a price.” The execs noted, however, that Jack will still remain apart of the team. “Once you are a member of 19,” Clack said, “you are always a member of 19.
Prior to the Season 7 premiere, the showrunner’s alluded to this decision. “I personally have felt that an underexplored part of firefighting, as it’s represented in media, is the expiration date on a firefighter’s career,” Paige told TVLine . “When we talk about, say, dancers, we always talk about how it’s a short career. But for firefighters, it can be a similarly devastating dream to hold. It can be taken away from you quite quickly for a myriad of reasons, one of which is death, one of which is injury. To hold this dream with all the risks that it entails and to have it taken from you is a powerful part of this story that is often overlooked.”
Clack chimed in and noted that they visit real fire stations every season for research. “The fire station we went to this time was being led by the media-relations person for the fire department, who was a firefighter, and this is now his duty in the department,” she said. “He was telling us about the physical and psychological toll that firefighting can have, and that sometimes you have to look beyond the immediate and find who you are other than that. We took that to heart and took that message in.”
Since Grey Damon was photographed at Station 19‘s 100 episodes celebration in February 2024, it was clear that Jack was going to live, but his career as a firefighter being over was something fan’s never predicted. However, it’s not a complete shock. Jack’s head injury in the Season 6 finale was not his first and the firefighter has suffered several concussions. In fact, just before Jack collapsed, Andy tried to warn him about what would happen if he got anymore concussions, but he cut her off before she could finish her sentence. Jack also collapsed earlier in the season during Episode 14 after suffering a concussion.
Station 19 airs on ABC on Thursdays at 8/7c and streams on Hulu.
